Andre Botha is quite a character! I have known him since he was a little grommet coming up on the scene of Bodyboarding. From South Africa, he travelled the world doing what he loved best and soon his talent made him World Champ! But with all success there are sometime the after math... He disappeared for a while succombing to all sorts of temptations.
This Portrait was taken on the north Shore of Hawaii with my 4x5, on Polaroid film, for Riptide Magazine who wanted to do a story on him. The spot was pretty cool but as soon as we moved the coconuts we got invaded by Mozies and had to do a run for it!!!

During Perth Fashion Festival we did a Photobooth shoot for a Client. To do the job we got the 8 Foot Profoto Giant Umbrella. This brolli packs a punch and the light wraps around the subject creating hardly any shadows and because it is used quite far from the subject, it lights both the subject and the background without any problem. Out of all the people, Kee was the best dress guy!! The look a like Elvis had more clothes than the King himself...

We were looking for a spot to do a shoot with a cool bike and ended finding this place 15 mins south of Perth, a cool little sand dune area perfect for what we wanted. The forecast was to be sunny but ended to have clouds so we had to use some artificial light to boost it a little. We shot the whole thing with the Leica S2 with only the 70mm lens on.

We forgot to post this but for those who didn't see our Facebook, we did this shoot for Match through Block Branding back in November last year and it got released in March this year. It was a pretty cool shoot with a fun feel to it. It was a shoot at the beach, at a Nightclub and a House. It took a while to source the right models and location but all involved did a fantastic job and the creative did a great job with the layout. We had seven models involved, Tom, Bruce, Tim, Ash, Madison, Alison and Charlotte which gave 120%. Make up artist Ady Aroupe and Rebecca Joanne did what they do best! Thanks to our assistant Bianca Martino for the wonderful job and keeping us company during the two days of shoot, Ben Riches for a third day of shooting. and thanks to Annie for the use of her beautiful house.

We did a bit of a test shoot for a client today with the Canon 7D and a Downhill Mountain Bike rider called, Jacob Parker . This kid can fly!! anyway while Erick was doing the filming, I did a quick set up of the Profoto 7b and 600R either side of the ramp and snapped a few.

It was one of those days where the sun was out just for that day while they predicted rain. We sought of taking advantage of it, but to organize a shoot the same day is not easy! You got to come up with the idea, then find a location, Model, clothes and props... By the time this is done it's three O'clock!! And your window of opportunity for your available light has kind of gone down the gurgler. But nevertheless, you soldier on and try to make it work regardless.
With less sun, the idea changes slightly and even more when you get there to find that the sun is obstructed by clouds and you won't be shooting until it's almost dark!!
Erick and I climbed the hill with bike, cameras, flash lights etc... and set up quickly to start shooting. This time we using the Leica S2 with 180mm lens (equivalent to about 110mm lens on a normal camera). This is a camera which is not quite a Medium Format but packs a punch of 37.5 Megapixel, smaller than your Nikon D3 and so waterproof, you could spill a glass of water on it without any problems, in another word a workhorse for advertising photographers in the field...
The shot above was shot at F6.8 at 1/30 of a second without a tripod. The result was amazing to say the least. The color tones and the sharpness is unbelievable!!

We got a call from a friend telling us Mickey Avalon was playing the following day! Picked up the phone, called a few contacts at Billabong and Von Zipper and in a few hours, I was talking to his manager giving us the all clear to shoot all day with us! We kind of had to drop everything to get this happening! Source the location and what we wanted out of the shoot.
The guy has got great charisma and if you don't know his music, that means you are already too old and you better lock your daughters because they all want Mickey!! With song title like 'my dick' and 'Jane Fonda' no wonder he's popular...

We went to the old wool store and shot there on the hasselblad in Black and White Kodak TMY 400 asa film. We got Darren McCaugh to film a little bit while we were shooting and did all the editing ourselves.

Our new SWC/M

Finally we have been able to get a Hasselblad SWC/M to fit the Gates Underwater Housing we bought! This means lots of water shoots in the next two months... We spoke to one of the guys at Hasselblad back in October last year while in NY and he informed us that the digital back would fit one of these. So we are thinking of getting it tethered to the surface if a long enough lead allows it to! Lot's of Fun...

Funny enough so many young photographers always ask me what's dangling around my neck, which is in fact a light meter, without realizing it was 'the tool' (and still is) that you had to have to take good photos. These days, they just shoot the first shot with their Digi then look at it and compensate for what they want to do...

Nebat is a percussionist traveling the world and playing with DJ's in New York, Ibiza, London, Paris, Tokyo, Dubai, Brazil and St Tropez. Nebat is originally from Algeria but now lives in France. We met him through our cousin who's over here from Mauritius where he played for a gig and he asked us for the possibility of a shoot. Although I haven't heard him played, but we spent time together and if his music is as good as his heart than anybody going to his concerts will not regret it! We are definitely glad that we can call him a friend...

Before shooting off to NYC we got to do a photoshoot for the PRTO again and this time a day around Peguin Island shooting what's on offer. we have hours of experience with the sea so this was kind of our field. Erick spent a great deal of time in the water that day trying to get the boat, the divers and the dolphins in line and shooting against the sun! The seals were much more cooperative and we got some great shots. The shoot was put off a couple of times because of clouds and wind but finally the last friday before we left was perfect. Thanks to Terry from Wild Encounters who looked after us all day.

The brief was just capturing the lifestyle and housing around the suburb of Fremantle where the new place was going to be. So Erick and I spent a couple of days walking the street and shooting what we though was cool about the place. The book came out great, thanks to the design and layout of the team at Block.

Today DEUS had there first swapmeet in Perth behind Design Farm on Hay St, about 350 people attended what is going to be an annual event. pretty cool day hanging with some of the surfing industry collectors and checking out their boards... 10% of all sales is going to PMH Children Hospital, so make sure you make it to the next one and support a good cause. Shoot NYC

When we were in New York our agent Rhoni Epstein got us onto this workshop called Shoot NYC. Basically it was sponsored by Hasselblad and Broncolor who had their latest gear on display. From Giant 10' umbrellas to the latest in Hasselblad cameras but the great thing also is that there was seven work station, some with product or with models where you could pick up a camera shoot it tethered to a Mac, it was really a hands on experience. But to top it all, they had seminars and workshop with top photagraphers, directors, blog gurus, fashion creatives, art buyers, magazine editors etc...
Basically a great two days experience, and I highly recomend it.

The Lucie's - Oh what a night...

Well, Wednesday afternoon after our meeting with JWT Agency, we dressed up for the Lucie Award and headed to the Lincoln Centre. Although, We didn't come out with a Lucie just being there was just great! We sat in the fifth row from the front beside people such as Howard Bigham (the photographer that took those famous photos of Mohamed Ali) who was getting a Lucie that night, and other great photographers. Being there and being nominated was a great honor. Certainly a night to remember!!!

We went to the exhibItion 'Best of Show' last night presented by the IPA where we had one of our entry exhibited. A showcase of photographs curated by Adriana Teresa of Visura Magazine. Hosted by Splashlight studio which is absolutely huge. It was great to meet the wonderful Susan Baraz, Sarah Cho and other photographers there.

The Print

As you noticed we haven't put anything on the blog for a while as we have been preparing our trip to New York. Back in August we were planning to go anyway but winning the IPA meant that it was not a maybe but a must! We landed on thursday night and after enduring our jetlag, sorted out our communication needs. We then went to Duggal! Duggal is a printing lab, a very good printing lab and since we have sold our first print from the stingray series last month, we were there to sign it before it got mounted. What was great was everyone passing by commented on the photo and even the owner came down to meet us.

The photo was printed as a C-Print and then will be sandwiched between a Japanese Plexiglass and Aluminium composite.

Never thought that place had some waves like this? Flew up there with a friend of mine, Luke who has his own plane, and a couple of his mates for three days and although the condition at first weren't the best, the next day eight foot sets were closing out with light offshore. The boys were Surfing the in between sets and getting shacked!!

8x10 Polaroid

These things are pretty hard to find and expensive also. One box of fifteen negative cost us US$500.00 plus freight! I saw one box once at US$800.00 on ebay!!! That was pretty rude I thought. You also need the machine that presses the Negative and Positive together and weighs a ton! The colours of the polaroid, I think, is unmatchable! It has got that soft warmth to it which is beautiful. But of course very hard to take as you need plenty of light and your subject needs to keep fairly still.

The Gaffer!

A gaffer on a shoot makes a world of difference! Gaffers knows their lights!! So all you have to do is explain what you want to recreate and he will bring out the sun for you. This gives you time to discuss other shoot aspects with the creative and the client.

Lab gone bad!

Erick and I went to the Elington Jazz Club last month to see a friend of ours, Bianca Jade, Perform. Another performer we saw there was Matt Gresham. This guy is incredible on the guitar!! We did a shoot with him on the Hasselblad with some black and white film and because we had so many problems with the local Pro Lab damaging our film, that we now send them to the States, to Richard Photo Lab. It may take a little longer but I have piece of mind that my negs are getting developed without black marks, scratches or bubble solution marks on the neg!!! They do Dev and High Res Scan for US$26.00.

Portfolio by Wonderful Machine

When our rep, Rhoni Epstein, contacted us to get a new portfolio done, we turned to Wonderful Machine to organize it. They communicated with our rep from layout to colour calibration, they did everything and though I have not seen the end product, as the folio went straight to Rhoni, she tells us that all the advertising agencies loves it. It's always good to know when you make an impression on people...

New York, here we come!!!

Came back this morning from a breakfast meeting to see a message from the IPA in my inbox! The IPA is the International Photography Awards held every year in New York. It is the Oscars of the photographers in America!! We couldn't believe our eyes reading the email (see below), the subject said "congratulation! You are an IPA Finalist"

Morning Bike Ride

Woke up at four O'clock to go to Lancelin with Aaryn, who is a pretty fit guy I should say, to do a test shoot. The weather has been all over the place lately so we had already cancelled the shoot a couple of times before. But last night seems to say that the rain would be holding off, and it did! The sunrise was spectacular and the colors out of this world... Check out all of them at www.tungsten.net.au

Adobe workflow

We got CS5 creative suite since it came out in June/July. Despite being the film guy where we would bring our rolls to be developed at the lab, with digital technology we had to face being the lab ourselves, meaning the development now is done in-house using the latest tools! Adobe has help us greatly to achieve that by using Bridge to read our raw files, then we sort them and disregard those with imperfections. We then add the metadata to all the images. We open them in Photoshop to colour calibrate batches or individual photos. We then save and export the photos as Tiff or JPG depending on the client's requirement but mostly in JPG. Once in JPG, we clean them up using the various tools in Photoshop CS5. This take time depending if your are dealing with faces or background/foreground colours that needs adjustments or just erasing something that shouldn't be there.
Once all the images has been photoshoped correctly we then create smaller viewing JPG for the client then burn both high Res and Low res on disc.

Once all the photos are dealt with, we burn a copy for us and store the best ones on our external hard drive and then import it into Lightroom. When the client wants to make decision on which photos to choose prior of any photoshoping, we provide them an online library, which Lightroom can create, so multiple parties can view the photos and make decisions on them.

All this take time and we have found that for every hour that we shoot then we have an hour of postproduction and this system help us to be efficient at what we do.

Blame

I was on a film set in February called Blame. The film was produced by both Factor30 Films and 3MonkeyFilms and written and Directed by Michael Henry. It was a good cast, with Damian de Montemas and Sophie Lowe to name a few, and was filmed just out of Perth in Roleystone. It was quite intense during the filming and It was difficult to shoot too much behind the scene due to the constant high emotion required from the actors. Coming back at night you kind of felt drained because of the intensity of it all.
The producers have just released the trailer which looks really good and the performance of all the actors looks outstanding!!

Finally Zaffiro has opened its store and therefore launch their website at the same time. The photos were staggered on three afternoons to take best advantage of the afternoon light. All these were shot in Perth of course using the profoto light and Nikon camera gear. John Cheese did the colour calibration on the images to bring a bit of sophistication. Make up by the lovely Sam Correy and Styling by the wonderful Sylvia Giacci.

Check her store, these are bloody good shirts made in Australia using great Italian Cloth!

Kodak Dan!

Kodak Dan was the nickname that people gave photographer Dan Milnor since he previously worked for the company. He, on numerous occasions, graced the North Shore with his presence since his wife was working closely with Canon Photographers. This is where Erick met Dan! Dan is an exceptional photographer that, like us, has a love for film and unlike a lot of other photographer will pursue what has to be done to get a great photo but not necessarily with money in mind. He is very much into producing limited edition books these days and spending his time shooting what he wants and not what he has to!
We spoke to Dan a couple of days ago about his new projects and if any of you are interested in photography, Dan is a great source of knowledge. His blog is very inspiring and a must read for those who have passion in film photography (film, as in not digital).

While down south in March, Erick caught up with Yadin Nichols which we saw growing as a grommet to a super star surfer. Yadin's hard work paid off a few years back now when he got sponsored by Hurley, Globe Shoes and Smith sunglasses.

We did this portrait of Troy MacMillan the other day for his website but we thought of adding a nice prop to the shoot. Living Edge in Northbridge carries some great designer chairs and has supported us tremendously for props. Classic brands such as Herman Miller, Emeco and others. Some of you may cringe about the price but there is always something good about a well made and designed object and once you sit in one of these you will not want to get up or buy any other!!!

This was done by freedivers, obviously with a few takes to get the different perspective... but it makes you gasp for air half way through. Incredible how deep that hole is....

Tourism campaign

Busy last month shooting for the Perth Regional Tourism Organisation with a coastal, city, and Swan Valley theme.

I climbed on a ladder for this shot trying to get the lines of the vines and enough depth to create a sense of space. Erick was running with the 120cm Lastolite reflector to add some light in the shadows of the couple. Shot of course with the Nikon D3 and 28-70mm lens.

Big thanks for our assistant Angelita which is from Italy and looking for assisting work in photography. She is full of energy..

The blue Issue

Malibu Magazine editor Jason Rouse contacted us last month as he saw some of our pictures of the stingrays we did on 4x5 Polaroid. They were coming out with their annual Blue Issue which is based on Ocean driven images, articles and personalities and wanted to publish a few of these images. Since the exhibition is not due until another year or so we were at first worried about the publication of such photos but this is a great boutique magazine distributed mainly in Malibu and therefore after speaking with our rep we decided it wouldn't do it too much harm for it to be publicized.

The cover here was shot by Michael Williams so if you do see the mag on the stand, get yourself a copy to see those polaroids.

I met Keith Curtain while he was marketing manager for Reef Australia. At the time we had a Black & White surfing exhibition touring the world and Keith help us out by sponsoring the Exhibition in Sydney. Now he runs the Australian Surfing Business Magazine (ASB) that is industry based news. The magazine is a great read if you want to know what really is going on in the surfing industry.

Keith was doing a series of covers for the magazine with numerous photographers but not your normal surfing shots... This time round he contacted us for their summer feel which we submitted a dozen photos. The cover reflects just that! Also thanks for the great write up on us mate...

Ry Craike called me on Thursday to come up to Kalbarri as there was a good swell predicted. So at the last minute, I packed all the gear and went North! The waves were not as big but we ended up getting some nice photos. Met Lorenna and did some lifestyle shots - she was a cool chick...

After much deliberation regarding our Rep in New York we decided that it was time to move on. I called my wonderful friend Susan Baraz the other day to see if she could recommend anyone to represent us in the States and she said she knew just the right person for us. In a matter of minutes Rhoni Epstein contacted me. She said she loves our work and would gladly represent us.

Rhoni is fantastic to say the least. She represents some amazing photographers. She is so hard working and communicating with her is a breeze. Erick and I are ecstatic and are really looking forward to work together with her to achieve great things...

She is in the process of redoing her web site which I will post when ready.

Sam McIntosh from Stab Magazine trying his luck at "The Right", a used to be secret spot but not anymore! There was seven Photographers and videographers there yesterday. It was a perfect day with sunny and light winds but unfortunately the swell peaked the night before and was on the decrease, so not so big when we got there!

Erick got to shoot the winter range from Son of Beach while in Hawaii. The weather was not that great but he managed to get a few good shots. The brief was casual.

Shot on the East Coast of Hawaii using Nikon gear again with a 28-70mm lens and a 70-200mm. If I have to shoot in Black and white, I prefer to shoot in Film but when the clients wants everything in Digital because of deadlines you can't have the luxury...

The Wealth Designers

We did a series of lifestyle shots for a boutique finance advising firm before Christmas called The Wealth Designers. The Brief was to shoot around Perth and create a feeling of "what you would be doing if you invested properly". We sat down with the agency and set up five different scenario. We shot a couple in a restaurant, a moving car in Kings Park, a family at the beach, a surfer at leighton and someone on a boat.

For the above shot we couldn't find the proper rig so we mounted a camera on a pole securing it in many ways. What didn't help was the road of Kings Park being so bumpy! We wanted a speed blurry affect so to accentuate the car's movement on the road so imagine the side movement of the camera with potholes!! The set up took about four hours and we did about fifteen takes to get what we wanted.
